Indexing and cross-referencing

There are many ways to make your book more user-friendly and helpful to the reader.

Indexes

We offer several types of autogenerated lists and indexes for your book:

  • Table of contents (with page numbers)

  • List of acronyms (with no page numbers)

  • List of tables and/or figures (with page numbers)

  • Author index (with page numbers)

  • Subject index (with page numbers)

For subject indexes, there are two options:

  • One-time-only subject index. Once the interior text has been approved, the manuscript is read and an index is manually written in Microsoft Word, using the page numbers on the final pages.

This method is appropriate if your book will never be indexed or repaginated again.

Page numbers for this type of subject index will not be automatically updated due to changes that result in repagination.

  • Updatable subject index. Index markers are inserted into the electronic files, which generate the index.

This method is appropriate if your book may be revised at a later date, which will result in possible repagination.

Page numbers for this type of subject index will be automatically updated due to changes that result in repagination.

Subject indexes will be created by a referred indexer whom you will pay and with whom you will work directly; however, if you would like us to work with them on your behalf, we will charge a consulting fee for that service. All expenses will be paid by you directly to the indexer.

Cross-references

We can insert cross-references (e.g., “see Chapter 1 on p. 354” or “see Figure 21, ‘Ways to Improve Your Diet,’ on p. 42”), which will update automatically if the pagination changes.

The next step

This process will continue until you are ready to move to the next step ... cover design.
